Enchanting gompas and ani gompas (nunneries) offer great day hikes from Tawang, including the ancient if modest Urgelling Gompa, where the sixth Dalai Lama was born. By road, it is 6km from Tawang town but closer on foot downhill from Tawang Gompa. Note that the monastery is sometimes closed; ask around for the caretaker, who has the only set of keys.
Located at a distance of around 50 km from Tawang town, Taktsang Gompa is placed near the Sangetsar Lake and border of China. A popular attraction of Tawang, this Gompa stands on the edge of a small hill. It is believed that Guru Padmasambhava visited this place for meditation during the 8th century.
A popular stupa in Arunachal Pradesh,Gorsam Chorten is famous for being one of the oldest stupas in the area. Located in the town of Tawang, midst the verdant greenery of the beautiful state,Gorsam Chortenis believed to have been built during the 12th century by a Monpa monk, Lama Pradhar. The spirituality of Buddhism seem to have surrounded this stupa as you will feel the vibe of divinity as soon as you step inside it.
